Geography

This course in geography not only studies the geopolitical and physical features of the earth, but also creatively explores the various peoples and cultures that inhabit it.  It is the goal of this class to gain an in depth understanding of the complexity of the perspectives of humans in response to the culture and environment that shapes them.  The classroom style will be a combination of college type lecture/discussions and collaborative project based learning in which we will actively explore the cultures of the earth.  Learners will learn to read and analyze maps as well as locate and identify the nations of the globe situated on each of the major continents.  As learners research and synthesize information, they will have an opportunity to develop social skills throughout the collaborative structure and format of the course.  Learners will also be given multiple opportunities to display what they have learned through the design and construction of class presentations in which they share their knowledge with others.  Overall, it is the goal of this course to allow multiple avenues for learners to connect with the past, and display their achievements in this learning community.

World History

This course in World History explores the known history of the world from the Classical Age of Antiquity of Greece and Rome to the present.  It is the goal of this class to gain a general understanding of world history including a framework for major trends, events, and peoples that played a key role in the progress of human society.  The classroom style will be a combination of college type lecture/discussions and collaborative project based learning in which we will actively explore the history of the earth.  Learners will read and analyze primary documents of the past and bring their own unique perspective to the material as they evaluate controversial events that have occurred.  As learners research and synthesize information, they will have an opportunity to develop social skills throughout the collaborative structure and format of the course.  Learners will also be given multiple opportunities to display what they have learned through the design and construction of class presentations in which they share their knowledge with others.  Overall, it is the goal of this course to allow multiple avenues for learners to connect with the past, and display their achievements in this learning community.

U.S. History

This course in United States History covers all of the events beginning with Colonial America up to recent developments that have shaped the modern United States of America.  It is the goal of this class to gain a general understanding of American History including a framework for major trends, events, and peoples that played a key role in the growth of our nation.  The classroom style will be a combination of college type lecture/discussions and collaborative project based learning in which we will actively explore our country’s history.  Learners will read and analyze primary documents of the past and bring their own unique perspective to the material as they evaluate controversial events that have occurred.  As learners research and synthesize information, they will have an opportunity to develop social skills throughout the collaborative structure and format of the course.  Learners will also be given multiple opportunities to display what they have learned through the design and construction of class presentations in which they share their knowledge with others.  Overall, it is the goal of this course to allow multiple avenues for learners to connect with the past, and display their achievements in this learning community.

U.S. Government

This course in government will provide a detailed look at the inner workings and structure of the United States’ Government.  The class will give particular attention to documents, people, trends, and events that shaped the systems that are still an important part of American society today. The classroom style will be a combination of college type lecture/discussions and collaborative project based learning in which we will actively explore our nation’s government. Learners will read, watch, and analyze current events that serve as a primary driver of lessons and daily agendas.  As learners research and synthesize information, they will have an opportunity to develop social skills throughout the collaborative structure and format of the course.  Learners will also be given multiple opportunities to display what they have learned through the design and construction of class presentations in which they share their knowledge with others.  Overall, it is the goal of this course to allow multiple avenues for learners to connect with the realities of political life, and display their achievements in learning this learning community.

Economics

This course in economics covers the basic foundations of economic principles that govern much of our modern society. Learners will engage in a variety of projects and activities that will provide them with hands on experience in the business world as well as prepare them to take a college class.  The style of the class will be a combination of college type lecture/discussions and collaborative project based learning in which the class actively explores the subject area of economics. Learners will read, watch, and analyze current events that serve as a primary resource for lessons and daily agendas.  As learners research and synthesize information, they will have an opportunity to develop social skills throughout the collaborative structure and format of the course.  Learners will also be given multiple opportunities to display what they have learned through the design and construction of class presentations in which they share their knowledge with others.  Overall, it is the goal of this course to allow multiple avenues for learners to connect with the economic structures that govern much of society, and display their achievements in this learning community.
